Head East Young Man: Moving Your Business from California to Texas (Part I of IV)

On Behalf of | Dec 3, 2016 | Business Management, California Law Update, Texas Law Update, Uncategorized

Numerous articles in the popular press have shown the demographic shifts and that a lot of people are moving from California to Texas.[1]  Naturally some of the people moving into Texas are going to be business owners. While we don’t have the hard statistics, our hunch is that there are a lot of business owners that are part of the migration.

In this multi-post blog series we’ll look at why this is happening and some of the things to do to make it happen. While the blog focuses on California to Texas some of the concepts would apply to moves from other states, such as Maryland, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts or Connecticut.

Why do we think business owners are moving from California to Texas?  For one, R. Shawn McBride is licensed to practice law in both California and Texas. For this reason he has gotten calls from business owners in California who want to start the process of leaving California and moving their business to Texas.

So why might a business owner want to leave California?  There are a few we hear regularly:

Taxes/Fees:  The level of taxes and fees in California can be staggering for a business owner.  From the basic filing fees to set up your company in California to the annual taxes on your business operations the cost of being in California can be staggering.

Regulations:  We often talk to business owners who are frustrated by the amount of regulation on their business by the State of California. They feel they just can’t do what they need to do. And when they can do it, it costs a lot.

High Cost of Living:  The high cost of living in California often makes business owners think about places where land, supplies, labor and other expenses might be lower.

In our next blog post we’ll look at the process of moving a business from one state to another.
